Cho Kyungtae: "Complete Leadership Resignation Is Cleanest... Early Party Convention Needed"
"The Way to Respect Public Sentiment Is to Form a New Leadership"
On June 5, Cho Kyungtae, a member of the People Power Party, called for the entire party leadership to resign, stating, "We need to hold an early party convention to form a new leadership team."
Speaking to reporters during a People Power Party general assembly at the National Assembly that day, Cho said, "A complete resignation of the leadership is the cleanest solution," adding, "We should elect a new floor leader as soon as possible and form a new leadership team within one to two months."
Cho emphasized, "This is neither a factional conflict nor an internal party struggle," and said, "The way to accept the public sentiment is to create a new leadership that can clearly bring an end to the unconstitutional and illegal 12·3 martial law."
In addition, Cho expressed his opposition to adopting an official party stance on three special prosecutor bills (the Insurrection Special Prosecutor Bill, the Kim Keonhee Special Prosecutor Bill, and the Chae Haebyung Special Prosecutor Bill), which are scheduled to be brought to the plenary session later that afternoon at the initiative of the Democratic Party of Korea.
Cho stated, "We should not just say in words that the martial law was wrong, but we must demonstrate it through action. I am deeply sorry that we have not shown such action." He continued, "I request the party to withdraw its official opposition to the three special prosecutor bills and allow a free vote instead."
