Man in His 40s Arrested for Killing Wife and Children Due to Financial Hardship
A man in his 40s who caused the deaths of his wife and two children due to financial hardship has been arrested by the police.
On June 4, Judge Kim Hoseok, the judge in charge of warrants at the Gwangju District Court, issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Ji on charges of murder and aiding and abetting suicide, citing concerns about flight risk after completing a pretrial detention hearing.
Mr. Ji is accused of killing his two sons, both high school students, by driving a car carrying his family into the sea at Jindo Port in Imhoe-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, at around 1:12 a.m. on June 1. Mr. Ji's wife, who was also in the car, died as well. The police charged him with involvement in her death, alleging that he aided her suicide.
Immediately after the incident, Mr. Ji escaped alone from the car and fled to Gwangju, where he was apprehended about 44 hours later. Mr. Ji, who had worked as a construction site laborer, stated that he committed the crime due to financial hardship, including debts amounting to approximately 160 million won and his wife's health issues.
