Ji is suspected of causing the deaths of his three family members by driving his car into the sea at Jindo Port, Imhoe-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, at around 1:12 a.m. on June 1. The vehicle was found at 8:07 p.m. the same day, about 30 meters from Jindo Port, with Ji's wife and two sons found dead inside.
Based on the fact that the driver’s and passenger’s windows were open, police believe Ji drove into the sea with his family and then escaped alone.
After getting out of the water, Ji did not call for help but instead received assistance from an acquaintance to return to Gwangju. The police investigation began after a homeroom teacher, concerned when one of the high school sons did not show up at school and could not be reached, filed a report.
Ji was apprehended by police at 9:09 p.m. on June 2, about 44 hours after the incident, near Yangdong Market in Seo-gu, Gwangju.
The police are questioning an acquaintance, referred to as A, who drove Ji back to Gwangju. They are also considering charging Ji with murder after confirming the exact circumstances of the family's deaths.
