According to the corporation, as of last year, 55% of customer injury accidents occurred while using escalators. Most of these incidents were caused by carelessness, and there is a risk that they could lead to major chain accidents, so special attention is required.
During the campaign, the corporation provided guidance on safety rules such as holding the safety handrail when using the escalator, not walking or running quickly, and using the elevator when carrying carts, strollers, or when intoxicated. They also distributed 500 fans printed with related safety guidelines.
The corporation is continuously working to improve facilities to prevent escalator-related customer accidents. It has completed the "inverter improvement project," which lowered the operating speed of all 168 escalators in the urban railway stations to enhance safety. In addition, it has promoted various safety improvements, such as expanding the installation of emergency stop switches, attaching "Caution: Tripping" stickers, and installing barriers to prevent electric scooters and similar vehicles from entering escalators.
Last year, the corporation secured 900 million won in national funding and installed auxiliary brakes, which are safety devices to prevent reverse movement, on a total of 113 escalators at 17 stations, including Daedong Station.
Yeon Kyuyang, president of Daejeon Transportation Corporation, said, "For safe use of the urban railway, it is most important for citizens themselves to pay attention and follow safety rules," and added, "The corporation will do its utmost to prevent accidents and establish a culture of safety so that all citizens, including the elderly, can use the urban railway with peace of mind."
