She will lead research planning aimed at opening a new future for the marine bioindustry in the Busan region.
The External Cooperation R&D Planning Support Project by BISTEP, a Busan-based R&D specialized institution, is designed to discover and plan medium- and large-scale R&D projects needed by universities, research institutes, and industries in the Busan area. It also supports the preparation of planning reports and application documents to attract these projects as national public offerings.
Through this project, Professor Ryu Bomi aims to attract a national research and development project with a total budget of 35 billion KRW. The strategy is to industrialize seaweed, a specialty marine product of Busan, as a high value-added marine bio-material, and establish it as a key growth engine for the future of Busan's marine bioindustry. To achieve this, local experts from industry, academia, and research institutes will participate and collaborate in the planning of the project.
The "Value Innovation of Seaweed" project aims to industrialize seaweed, a specialty marine product of Busan, as a high value-added marine bio-material. The project focuses on materials recognized as key growth drivers in Busan's marine bio sector. In particular, it seeks to scientifically re-examine the value of seaweed-related food culture, including Miyeokguk, a seaweed soup commonly consumed for postpartum recovery, and includes plans to foster a global marine brand.
Through this project, the Busan Metropolitan Government plans to establish a sustainable R&D ecosystem and design a regional-led foundation for the industrialization of marine resources. The project is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of Busan's marine bioindustry and contribute greatly to building an innovation ecosystem led by the region.
