Play "Sichu": Confronting Human Inferiority and Hypocrisy in Antarctica
The theater group Munjibang will stage the play "Sichu" from June 6 to 15 at the Daehakro Arts Theater Small Theater.
"Sichu" is a contemporary psychological drama that reimagines "Othello," one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies, in a modern setting.
The play is set at Jang Bogo Station, a Korean Antarctic research base, with the timeline taking place in May, when winter arrives in Antarctica.
At the Antarctic base established by Korea, seven overwintering research members live together. Medical officer Kim Ji-hye conducts week-long counseling sessions with all overwintering team members to check for symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) caused by the polar night phenomenon, during which the sun does not rise all day.
Created collaboratively by Munjibang, "Sichu" delves deeply into the hidden inner worlds of seven overwintering research members living together in the extreme and isolated environment of Antarctica. Just as one would drill through thick glaciers, the play penetrates the thoroughly concealed depths of the human psyche, confronting dark emotions such as inferiority and hypocrisy.
"Sichu" premiered in 2022 and has been invited to numerous theater festivals, including the Miryang Performing Arts Festival, Seoul Mirae Theater Festival, and Busan International Theater Festival.
