Acting President Han: "Stepping Down from Key Post to Take on Greater Responsibility"... Hints at Presidential Bid
"If We Do Not Abandon Extreme Politics and Embrace Cooperation, Division and Conflict Will Persist"
Han Ducksoo, Acting President and Prime Minister, announced on May 1, "I have made the final decision to step down from my post in order to do what I can and what I must to overcome the crisis we are facing."
In a national address delivered at the Government Complex Seoul that afternoon, Acting President Han stated, "If there is no other way, then I have decided that this is the path I must take."
He continued, "Given the gravity of the responsibilities I bear during this critical time, I have long agonized and deliberated over whether this decision is truly right and inevitable," adding, "I have been contemplating what it means to fulfill my responsibilities."
Han Ducksoo expressed concern, saying, "Whether Korean politics moves toward cooperation or falls into the trap of extreme politics is now in our hands. If we do not abandon extreme politics and lay the foundation for cooperation, whoever comes to power, division and conflict will only repeat themselves."
He further pointed out, "Korea is a country that has overcome crises by uniting as one, but our society is now mired in a swamp of factionalism, with both sides turning their backs on each other. For years, no reasonable discussion has been possible."
He added, "For the sake of the country, I will continue to follow the path I believe is best, at this very moment and in the future, without any excuses, until the end."
