Production of Biogas from Sewage Sludge, Food Waste, and Manure
A Source of City Gas Supplying 8,283 Households Annually

Located on the left side of the overpass heading towards the Sihwa Embankment in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do, there is a facility with a total floor area of 33,430㎡ harmonized with a park. This is the 'Siheung-si Clean Energy Center,' which was built through a private investment project and began operations in June last year.

On the 18th, a delegation from Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, visiting Korea for the Korea-Singapore Climate Change Dialogue, visited this site together with representatives from the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit was to tour the domestic eco-friendly energy production and waste reduction processing system.

The Siheung-si Clean Energy Center is a facility that produces biogas by integrating the treatment of sewage sludge, food waste, and manure. By utilizing methane gas generated during the waste reduction process as an energy source to replace fossil fuels, it achieves a greenhouse gas reduction effect.

Biogas production facilities using organic waste resources have recently been recognized as sustainable new renewable energy source models that can replace fossil fuels, both domestically and internationally.

In fact, this facility processes 540㎥ of sewage sludge, 145㎥ of food waste, and 60㎥ of manure daily. Operation is managed by H Energy Co., Ltd., established by a consortium led by Hyundai Engineering & Construction.

The biogas produced amounts to about 30,000 Nm³ (normal cubic meters, a unit of gas volume at 0°C and 1 atmosphere) per day. This results in a reduction effect of 190,000 tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the amount absorbed by approximately 29 million trees over one year. The annually refined 4.6 million Nm³ of biogas from this facility is supplied as city gas. This amount can be used for heating and cooking by 8,283 households for one year.

A Siheung-si official stated, "The Siheung-si Clean Energy Center will play a key role as a sustainable energy model for achieving carbon neutrality goals and for future generations."
