Feeling Deep Responsibility for the May 18 Distortion Controversy
...Vows to Sever All Ties
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has acknowledged and officially apologized for allocating advertising expenses to the far-right media outlet ‘Sky Daily’, which has denied the May 18 Democratization Movement.
On the 17th, the Office issued a statement saying, “We deeply bow our heads and apologize to the citizens of Gwangju,” and added, “We have confirmed that 1 million won in advertising expenses was paid to Sky Daily in October last year.” The statement continued, “The payment was made without recognizing the media’s orientation, as it was one of more than 350 registered outlets,” and “Regardless of the reason, this should never have happened, and we take full responsibility.” The Office also stated, “Sky Daily has been immediately removed from our list of media contacts, and we will have no further association with them in the future.”
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Hankyoreh reported that local governments in Gwangju and Jeonnam, including the Gwangju Office of Education, had allocated several million to tens of millions of won in advertising expenses to ‘Sky Daily’. The outlet has previously been reported for spreading false information denying the May 18 Democratization Movement, and related controversies continue to arise.
An official from the Office stated, “We will respond firmly to historical distortion and do our utmost to provide proper history education.”
