Newly appointed Prime Minister Carney took first place, defeating former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland. Approximately 150,000 Liberal Party members participated in the vote for this leadership race.
Following the opposition coalition's no-confidence motion threatening the premiership of current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his intention to resign in January, the Liberal Party began the election process to select a new party leader.
U.S. news agency Reuters highlighted that Carney, who has no political experience, is the right person to revive the Liberal Party and successfully lead trade negotiations with the Trump administration, praising his victory.
Carney is credited with leading the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis. In 2013, he also served as Governor of the Bank of England, becoming the first non-British person to hold the position.
