52% Favor Regime Change vs 37% Support Regime Continuation
Six out of ten citizens support the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, according to a public opinion poll. There was also a majority opinion in favor of introducing a special prosecutor for the investigation related to Mr. Myeong Tae-gyun.
According to a poll released on the 7th by Gallup, a public opinion research firm (conducted from the 4th to the 6th nationwide targeting 1,003 people aged 18 and over using wireless phone virtual number interviewer method. The margin of error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate was 14.2%), 60% of respondents said they support the impeachment of President Yoon. This is an increase of 1 percentage point compared to the same survey last week. Opposition to impeachment remained at 35%, the same as last week.
Looking at the data by age group, support for impeachment was dominant at 66%, 59%, 77%, and 66% among those in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, respectively. However, among those in their 60s, support (48%) and opposition (49%) were similar, while those aged 70 and above showed more opposition (59%) than support (39%). By political orientation, 92% of progressives supported impeachment, while 69% of conservatives opposed it. Among moderates, support (79%) significantly outpaced opposition (22%).
Regarding the next presidential election, 37% believed the ruling party should extend its administration, while 52% thought the administration should be replaced with an opposition candidate winning. In an open-ended question about future presidential candidates, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, ranked first with 35%. Following him were Kim Moon-soo, Minister of Employment and Labor (10%), Han Dong-hoon, former leader of the People Power Party (6%), Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu (5%), Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul (4%), Lee Jun-seok, member of the Reform New Party (1%), and Cho Guk, former leader of the Cho Guk Innovation Party (1%). Those who reserved their opinion accounted for 34%.
In terms of party support, the People Power Party received 36%, and the Democratic Party received 40%. Compared to last week, the Democratic Party's support increased by 2 percentage points, while the People Power Party's support remained the same.
Regarding the recently rising constitutional amendment debate, 54% responded that a constitutional amendment to change the presidential system is necessary, which was higher than the 30% who said it was not necessary. When asked about the direction of the amendment, 64% supported a four-year renewable term system compared to the current single five-year term system. Regarding presidential powers, 43% said the current level should be maintained, while 35% said it should be reduced, and 14% said it should be expanded.
Regarding the investigation of Mr. Myeong Tae-gyun, 59% supported introducing a special prosecutor, which was higher than the 28% who thought it unnecessary.
