Dangjin Bettle Kong Listed in the Ark of Taste by the International Slow Food Association
Expected to Serve as a Foundation for Developing Regionally Specialized Products
On the 4th, Dangjin City in Chungnam announced that Dangjin Bettle-kong has been listed in the 'Ark of Taste,' a global food heritage protection project by the International Slow Food Association.
The International Slow Food Association, established in 1986 and headquartered in Italy, is an international organization with member countries from 161 nations.
The Ark of Taste is a project aimed at discovering and preserving food culture heritages at risk of extinction worldwide. To be listed, the food ingredient must be produced in a specific region and follow traditional production methods.
Dangjin Bettle-kong is the first case from Dangjin City to be registered in the Ark of Taste. The city began preparations for registration in 2024 and achieved this milestone in February this year.
Through this registration, not only will the native seeds of Bettle-kong, which are disappearing from Dangjin, be preserved, but also the documentation of its uses is expected to serve as an important foundation for developing regionally specialized products in the future.
A city official stated, "The traditional seeds of Dangjin City have now been recognized for their value worldwide," and added, "Building on this, we will continue to promote projects to further enhance the development of regionally specialized products and the brand value of Dangjin City."
