Gwangju Seo-gu Focuses Administrative Efforts on Creating a 'Gam-tan City'
Seo-gu to Invest Incentives in Carbon Neutrality Projects
Plans for "Gam-tan City Seo-gu" and Resident-Led Climate Action
Seo-gu District of Gwangju City (District Mayor Kim Ikang) announced on the 4th that it will focus its administrative efforts on creating a "Gam-tan City Seo-gu" based on carbon neutrality practices with residents.
Seo-gu will invest the 25 million won performance incentive it secured after being selected as the top autonomous district in Gwangju City's carbon neutrality practice project evaluation last November into greenhouse gas reduction projects such as LED replacement and solar panel installation.
By May, the district plans to establish the "Seo-gu-style Carbon Neutrality Plan," which will include the development of a greenhouse gas reduction roadmap, expansion of renewable energy supply, and creation of a sustainable urban foundation.
In addition, Seo-gu will establish the third five-year Climate Crisis Adaptation Plan (2026-2030) to minimize damage from climate change such as heat waves, floods, and air pollution, and to set up an effective response system through analysis of climate crisis impact factors and vulnerability assessment.
Furthermore, the Climate and Environment Division is currently recruiting members for the "Gam-tan Angel Lifestyle Practice Group" to encourage residents to voluntarily practice carbon neutrality.
Participants will carry out the "Gam-tan Lifestyle Practice Challenge," in which they certify their daily carbon-neutral activities such as using tumblers, separating recyclables, and using public transportation. They will also produce engaging and easy-to-understand videos on carbon-neutral practices in daily life to broaden public consensus.
Nam Munhyo, head of the Climate and Environment Division, said, "Practicing carbon neutrality together with residents is the key to responding to the climate crisis," and added, "We will actively cooperate with the local community to realize Seo-gu as a carbon-neutral city by 2045 and discover and implement efficient policies."
