Yangsan-si Enhances Citizens' Perception of Safety on Night Streets
Full-scale Promotion of Nighttime Lighting Improvement Project in Vulnerable Areas
Crime Prevention, Enhanced Safety, and a Brighter Urban Image
Yangsan City in Gyeongnam has decided to actively promote a nighttime lighting improvement project, which is expected to significantly enhance citizens' sense of safety by preventing crime and creating a brighter urban atmosphere.
Although Yangsan City received high ratings in the 2024 Regional Safety Index announced by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety?1st grade in the living safety category and 2nd grade in the infectious disease category?it received a low rating of 4th grade in the crime category. To address this, the city will implement a nighttime lighting improvement project targeting areas with high crime rates and safety vulnerabilities.
The city plans to improve the brightness of aging lights by increasing lamp capacity (W) by 25 to 30% and installing new lighting facilities considering citizens' living spaces and movement paths. The project will cover a total of 1,481 locations, with an estimated total budget of approximately 2.6 billion KRW to be invested annually.
According to statistics, crime rates tend to increase in areas lacking sufficient lighting at night. Therefore, strengthening nighttime lighting on main roads, under bridges along riverside walking trails, and in dark alleys has a significant crime prevention effect.
The city expects this nighttime lighting improvement project to be an important turning point that goes beyond simple lighting upgrades to enhance overall urban safety that citizens can feel and strengthen crime prevention effects.
