Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo clarified that his preparation for an early presidential election does not mean he wishes for the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol to be accepted.
On the 21st, Mayor Hong wrote on Facebook, "While I sincerely hope for President Yoon Seok-yeol's return through the dismissal of the impeachment, my position is that we must prepare in case an early presidential election is held due to the acceptance of the impeachment." He added, "This is because we have the painful experience of having to face the presidential election unprepared and hastily during Park Geun-hye's impeachment, which led to handing over the government without a fight."
"If the impeachment is accepted contrary to our wishes, there will be only about two months before the impeachment election. It is nearly impossible to hold a presidential election within two months without preparation," he said. "Therefore, we must prepare for the next presidential election in advance, anticipating the worst-case scenario." He emphasized again, "Party members and the public should understand that I am by no means hoping for the acceptance of President Yoon's impeachment."
That morning, he also made remarks seemingly targeting political broker Myung Tae-kyun and Myung's legal representative, lawyer Nam Sang-kwon. Mayor Hong, who is mentioned as a ruling party presidential candidate, was recently embroiled in allegations involving political broker Myung Tae-kyun. It was revealed that in May 2023, Hong's son sent a KakaoTalk message to Myung asking him to "take good care" and that tickets to a festival hosted by Daegu City were given. Regarding this, Mayor Hong explained, "What crime is it that my son was deceived by Myung Tae-kyun and sent a thank-you message? A person named Choi, who follows Myung Tae-kyun, is a high school classmate of my son and told him to say thank you to Myung because he thought there might be harm. That’s all there is to the message my son sent."
