'Bribery' Former Head of Saemangeum Solar Project Receives 2 Million Won Fine in First Trial
A person affiliated with Saemangeum Solar Power, who was prosecuted for bribing a city hall official during the Saemangeum floating solar power project in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, was sentenced to a fine.
On the 13th, Judge Cho Mi-ok of the Seoul Northern District Court Criminal Division 1 sentenced the project leader Choi to a fine of 2 million KRW for bribery charges. However, Judge Cho acquitted Choi of the embezzlement charges related to his duties.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant showed remorse, and the bribe provided was relatively small."
Earlier, Choi was indicted for delivering gift certificates worth about 600,000 KRW to a Gunsan city hall official through a subordinate employee around September 2020. He was also charged with inflating the design and permit service fees related to the floating solar power project, then receiving the excess amount in cash to create and embezzle slush funds totaling 243 million KRW.

Meanwhile, Saemangeum Solar Power is a special purpose company (SPC) jointly established by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Hyundai Global for the Saemangeum floating solar power project. Choi served as the project leader for about two years starting from May 2019.
