Gwangju Seo-gu: Two Types of Seafood Pass Radiation Inspection
Collection of Sea Bass and Red Sea Bream
No Detection of Iodine or Cesium
Seo-gu District of Gwangju City (District Mayor Kim Ikang) conducted radiation tests on two types of distributed seafood and found both to be 'compliant'.
Seo-gu announced on the 7th that on the 31st of last month, it visited the Seobu Agricultural and Fishery Wholesale Market in Maewol-dong, collected representative high-consumption seafood species such as sea bass and red sea bream, and conducted radiation tests.
In this test, radioactive substances such as iodine and cesium were not detected, resulting in a 'compliant' judgment. The results were transparently disclosed and published on the district office website for residents to verify.
The inspection was conducted as a preemptive measure to alleviate residents' concerns over the continued discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan and to promote consumption that has shrunk due to the economic downturn.
The district plans to continue conducting monthly radiation tests on distributed seafood at wholesale markets and supermarkets to ensure safe seafood that residents can trust, and will publish the results.
In addition, the district will regularly conduct hygiene inspections and enhanced seafood safety management training for seafood retailers within its jurisdiction, and will strengthen the safety management of distributed seafood by promoting seafood safety and hygiene guidelines through SNS and other channels.
A district official said, "We plan to further strengthen radiation testing and inspections so that residents can safely consume seafood, thereby increasing trust between small business owners and consumers," and added, "We will implement safety policies that residents can truly feel, not only for seafood but for overall food safety management."
