Suspected Arson Fire in Gwangju Apartment... Owner in His 60s Found Dead in Flower Bed
A man in his 60s was found dead after setting fire to his own apartment in Gwangju.
According to Gwangju police on the 1st, a report was received at around 2:11 a.m. that a fire had broken out in a unit on the third floor of a 15-story apartment building in Ssangchon-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju.
Four residents inhaled smoke and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Emergency responders rescued 10 residents, while 17 others evacuated on their own.
The fire completely destroyed Mr. A’s home (19㎡), causing property damage estimated at approximately 11 million won by fire authorities, and was fully extinguished after 19 minutes.
Mr. A, the owner of the apartment where the fire started, was found dead in a flower bed in a nearby apartment complex around 3 a.m. that day.
Police are investigating the exact circumstances, believing that Mr. A set fire to his home and then died after falling from a nearby apartment, based on analysis of closed-circuit (CC) TV footage.
