Kim Dong-kwan, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Group, strengthened his global network by communicating with key cabinet members of the 'Trump 2nd term' during the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President Donald Trump held in Washington D.C. At this event, Vice Chairman Kim introduced Hanwha Group's U.S. businesses in shipbuilding, defense, and energy sectors and held meetings with global CEOs, demonstrating a broad diplomatic role as a private envoy.
According to Hanwha Group on the 22nd, Vice Chairman Kim attended the Candlelight dinner held at the National Building Museum on the evening of the 19th (local time), where he met with key figures of the new U.S. administration, including Mark Rubio, Secretary of State, Pete Hegseth, nominee for Secretary of Defense, and Mike Waltz, National Security Advisor.

View original imageWith expectations of strengthened cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. in shipbuilding and defense sectors following the launch of the Trump 2nd term, Vice Chairman Kim met with major defense and security officials of the new U.S. government to introduce the business capabilities of Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace and explore business opportunities within the U.S.
He also met with Doug Burgum, nominee for Secretary of the Interior, exchanging views on the new administration's energy policies, and held business meetings with numerous Republican members of Congress and CEOs of global defense companies. It is reported that he introduced the status of Hanwha Group's U.S. businesses in shipbuilding, defense, and energy sectors during these meetings.
Hanwha Ocean laid the foundation for expanding its U.S. naval ship business by acquiring the U.S. shipyard Philly Shipyard last year and is actively pursuing new business opportunities, including winning two MRO projects for the U.S. Navy for the first time in Korea.
Hanwha Aerospace is targeting the U.S. defense procurement market centered on the K9 self-propelled howitzer, which has already been exported to 10 countries. Recently, it appointed Michael Coulter, a former key official of the U.S. Department of Defense and defense expert, as the head of overseas business to strengthen its entry into the defense market.
