Launching Ceremony Held for Two Offshore Patrol Vessels
Trading company STX announced on the 20th that it held a launching ceremony on the 10th (local time) at the Peruvian state-owned SIMA shipyard located in Chimbote, Peru, for two offshore patrol vessels being constructed together.
The launching ceremony was attended by high-ranking Peruvian officials, including President Dina Boluarte, Minister of Defense Walter Astudillo, and Navy Chief of Staff Luis Jose Plar Figari.

View original imageThe two patrol vessels were named 'Rio Huarmi' and 'Rio Nepe?a,' respectively, and feature a length of 56.4 meters, a width of 8.5 meters, and a maximum speed of 23 knots (approximately 42.6 km/h). They are equipped with diesel engines from the American heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar, a 30mm remote-controlled weapon system (RCWS), and 12.7mm machine guns.
They are scheduled to be completed and delivered in the second half of this year and are expected to be deployed for coastal patrol duties in Peru, enhancing regional security.
STX has built trust by supporting the construction of patrol vessels numbered 1 through 6 for the Peruvian Navy from 2013 to 2021. In May 2023, it signed a contract worth 36 million USD (approximately 53 billion KRW) with the Peruvian government for the construction of vessels 7 and 8, playing a pivotal role in strengthening Peru's maritime defense.

An STX official stated, "STX not only signed an export contract for wheeled armored vehicles in cooperation with the Peruvian Army Ordnance Factory last October but is also responsible for the construction and supply of Peruvian offshore patrol vessels," adding, "We will strive to modernize and strengthen Peru's defense industry and military capabilities across both the army and navy."
