Pusan National University is hosting a handwritten calligraphy contest for enrolled students and developing the winning entries into Hangul fonts, which will be distributed for free. This initiative aims to rediscover the beauty of Hangul through the students' originality and the warm emotion of handwritten script, and to spread a creative font culture both on and off campus.
Pusan National University (President Choi Jae-won) Publishing and Culture Center announced on the 16th that it held the "1st PNU Handwritten Calligraphy Contest" last November to promote love for Hangul and communication among university members, and recently developed three winning works into fonts for free distribution.
Pusan National University organized this event not only to practice love for Hangul but also to activate exchanges among the Busan, Yangsan, and Miryang campuses and to foster a sense of belonging as a place for communication and harmony. In particular, for the Miryang campus, group transportation was provided to encourage active student participation, thereby strengthening solidarity among campuses.
Earlier, on November 14 last year, about 400 enrolled students participated in the calligraphy contest held at the Pusan National University Museum Gaon. Based on creativity and completeness, experts judged the entries and selected one grand prize winner and two excellence award winners. An awards ceremony was held on December 5, followed by about a month of font development.
The font created by Jang Eun-young, a student in the Department of Geography Education, who won the grand prize, is named ‘Munchangbyeol Eunyoungche’. The works by Bae So-hee from the Department of Russian Language and Literature and Kang Da-eun from the Department of Food and Nutrition, who won excellence awards, were developed into ‘Saebyeokdeul Soheeche’ and ‘Saebyeokdeul Daeunche’, respectively, and were recently released on the Pusan National University Publishing and Culture Center website.
The fonts developed through this contest are expected to be used in official PNU events and various media, strengthening the university's identity and enriching campus culture as valuable assets.
Additionally, through exhibitions linked to the "2nd PNU Handwritten Calligraphy Contest" to be held in October this year in celebration of Hangul Day, these works will be loved and utilized not only by university members but also by many people outside the university, continuously promoting the beauty of Hangul widely.
Choi Jin-ah, director of the Pusan National University Publishing and Culture Center, said, "We hope that the Hangul fonts born from this contest will become cultural symbols of our university and further develop into a K-culture brand unique to Pusan National University."
