Hanwool Nuclear Power Plant Wolsong Unit 2, Abnormal Discharge Confirmed in Liquid Waste Treatment System
Levels of Radioactivity, Including Discharged Liquid Tritium, Remain Within Permissible Limits
On the 12th at around 10:05 AM, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Wolsong Headquarters confirmed that liquid waste was discharged without monitoring from the low-level radioactive material storage tank of Wolsong Unit 2 (a 700,000 kW pressurized heavy water reactor) operating normally, and reported it to the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.
The Wolsong Nuclear Power Headquarters evaluated the radioactive materials released into the ocean, confirming tritium at 1.116×10¹? Bq and gamma nuclides at 3.589×10? Bq. They explained that this corresponds to a negligible level, with tritium at one hundred-thousandth (0.001%) and gamma nuclides at six millionths (0.0006%) of the annual discharge limit.
Additionally, the effective dose to residents from this leak is 6.97×10?? mSv per year, a value similar to normal conditions. The Wolsong Nuclear Power Headquarters will continue analyzing marine environmental samples to monitor the impact on the environment.
