Patrick Fishburn and Denny McCarthy (both from the USA) shared the lead at 10 under par (130 strokes).
Starting from a tie for 44th place, Kim made five birdies without any bogeys. After reducing two strokes in the front nine with birdies on holes 1 and 6, he made another birdie on the 13th hole (par 4). He then chased the leaders with consecutive birdies on holes 17 and 18. He is only three strokes behind the co-leaders. He has been on an upward trend recently, finishing as runner-up in both the Hero World Challenge and the Grand Thornton Invitational, which were event tournaments held last December.
Gensei Hirata (Japan) and Eric Cole (USA) are tied for third place at one stroke behind (9 under par, 131 strokes). Hirata won the Shinhan Donghae Open last September, a tournament jointly organized by the Korean Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA), the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO), and the Asian Tour. His maternal grandfather and grandmother were born in Korea and moved to Japan when he was young.
