Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will operate the country's first exhibition titled "Masters of New York: Jackson Pollock and Friends of Mark Rothko."
The exhibition "Masters of New York: Jackson Pollock and Friends of Mark Rothko" is a special event that brings together major works by artists representing Abstract Expressionism, which marked a milestone in modern art history, for the first time in Korea. It features 35 works and videos by 21 masters of contemporary art including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner, Jasper Johns, Barnett Newman, Robert Motherwell, and Sol LeWitt.
This special exhibition is the inaugural exhibition commemorating the opening of the Nowon Art Museum within the Nowon Cultural and Arts Center. It is co-hosted by Nowon-gu, Seoul Shinmun, the Jewish Museum in New York, and the FEP Foundation, and jointly organized by the Nowon Cultural Foundation, the National Asia Culture Center Foundation, and ENA Partners Co., Ltd.
The exhibition highlights the flow of contemporary art from the emergence of the New York School to Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and Pop Art.
The exhibition is divided into four parts: ▲Part 1: Challenges Beyond Dreams, covering the period when postwar artists pioneered new realms of abstraction based on freedom and experimental spirit; ▲Part 2: Abstract Expressionism, showcasing works that reinterpret human inner struggles; ▲Part 3: Abstraction and Color Field Painting, focusing on works exploring new pictorial possibilities through color and geometric composition; and ▲Part 4: Minimalism, introducing the development of contemporary art through various references and symbols including Minimalism.
Notably, Jackson Pollock's "Horizontal Composition (1949)" will be unveiled in this exhibition. This work, measuring 3 meters in length, was created using Pollock's representative 'action painting' technique and is valued at approximately 200 billion KRW.
Additionally, a free audio guide is provided to help visitors better understand the artworks. The audio guide, featuring broadcaster Jeon Hyun-moo, offers a trustworthy voice and easy yet detailed explanations to deepen visitors' appreciation of the works.
The "Masters of New York" exhibition runs from January 10 to July 10. Detailed information about the exhibition operation and ticket reservations can be found on the Nowon-gu Office or Nowon Cultural Foundation websites.
