Mokpo City Implements Basic Birth Allowance... 150,000 Won Paid Monthly
Eligible from January 1, 2024
Support provided for 18 years from ages 1 to 18
Mokpo City, Jeonnam (Mayor Park Hongryul) will begin accepting applications for the Basic Childbirth Allowance starting January this year.
According to the city on the 6th, the Jeonnam Province-Mokpo City Basic Childbirth Allowance is a program aimed at improving the current childcare support system, reducing the financial burden of childcare by providing support until school age when expenses are most urgent, and overcoming low birth rates. The allowance will be provided for 18 years, from ages 1 to 18. The payment amount is 100,000 KRW from Jeonnam Province and 50,000 KRW from the city, totaling 150,000 KRW, to be paid on the 25th of each month.
The recipients are children who have been registered as born in Jeonnam after January 1, 2024. Both the newborn and the guardian must have continuously maintained their resident registration address in Jeonnam since the date of birth registration. If at least one of the newborn or guardians has an address in Mokpo City as of the application date, the application can be submitted to Mokpo City.
If the application is made between the 1st and 15th of the month, payment will start from the 25th of that month; if after the 16th, payment will begin on the 25th of the following month. Guardians such as parents can apply starting from one month before the child's first birthday. Applications can be made by visiting the administrative welfare center of the district where the newborn is registered or online through the Government24 website.
For this Basic Childbirth Allowance, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's consultation on the establishment of a new social security system (applied uniformly to 22 cities and counties), it has been decided to implement the program for one year only in 2025 as a pilot. Jeonnam Province and the Ministry of Health and Welfare plan to continue discussions to ensure the program can be sustained beyond 2026.
A city official stated, "We hope this will alleviate the financial burden of childcare for families and serve as a measure to overcome low birth rates. As this is the first implementation, we will make every effort to promote the program thoroughly so that many families can apply."
