Court: "An Unacceptable Crime"
In April of last year, a man in his 20s who wielded a weapon without reason and injured a stranger was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the first trial.
According to the legal community on the 5th, the Criminal Division 13 of Suwon District Court (Chief Judge Park Jeong-ho) ordered A (29), who was detained and prosecuted on charges including attempted murder, to serve a prison sentence along with treatment custody and to wear an electronic tracking device for 15 years.
The court stated, "The defendant's 'random attack' can make anyone a victim, and due to the sudden nature of the crime, it causes significant social anxiety." It also emphasized, "Although the murder attempt against the victim was unsuccessful, murder is a serious crime that cannot be tolerated for any reason."
The court explained the sentencing by mentioning that A inflicted injuries on dangerous parts of the victim's body, and that the physical and psychological aftereffects the victim is expected to suffer are considerable. It added that A did not make efforts to compensate the victim and was not forgiven by the victims.
