Muan Airport Passenger Plane "Landing Gear Failure Suspected in Fuselage Landing Accident"
Landing Gear Failure Suspected Due to Bird Strike
28 Casualties Confirmed... "Additional Figures Being Assessed"
The Jeju Air passenger plane that crashed at Muan International Airport is presumed to have had an accident while attempting to land on the fuselage due to a landing gear failure.
According to airport authorities on the 29th, the Jeju Air flight 7C2216, which departed from Bangkok, Thailand at 1:30 a.m. that day, is understood to have had an accident while landing on the fuselage due to a landing gear malfunction.
The aircraft was scheduled to land at Muan Airport at 8:30 a.m. that day. It attempted to land on runway 1 at Muan Airport, but when a normal landing became impossible, it went around and tried to land again. It is presumed that the landing gear, which corresponds to the wheels, did not deploy properly. The aircraft attempting a fuselage landing was unable to reduce speed until it reached the end of the runway and collided with structures at the end of the airport. Subsequently, the fuselage was damaged and a fire appears to have broken out. The cause of the landing gear failure is currently presumed to be a "bird strike."
The accident caused severe damage to the fuselage of the aircraft, resulting in multiple casualties. The fire department began searching from the rear of the aircraft and has confirmed 28 casualties so far. One passenger and one crew member have been rescued, and additional casualties are being identified.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has established a Central Accident Response Headquarters on the 6th floor of the Government Sejong Complex. Seven investigators from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB), the head of the aviation technology department, and supervisors were dispatched to the site. It is also reported that Park Sang-woo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and Baek Won-guk, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry, have arrived at the accident response headquarters.
