"Experience the Same" Driven by Revenge... Woman in Her 60s Kills Ex-Husband
Decision to Commit Crime Due to Past Incident of Being Tied to a Forklift
Changwon District Court Sentences to 17 Years Imprisonment
A woman in her 60s who harbored resentment against her ex-husband for having once tied her to a backhoe eventually committed murder and was sentenced to a heavy prison term.
On the 20th, the Criminal Division 2 of Changwon District Court (Chief Judge Kim Seonghwan) sentenced A, a woman in her 60s, to 17 years in prison on charges of murder, according to Yonhap News on the same day. A was tried for killing her ex-husband B, also in his 60s, at a residential area of an aquaculture farm in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, last June. They had divorced in 2003 after 15 years of marriage but continued to meet frequently and handle family matters together afterward.
A had harbored resentment during the marriage, believing that her ex-husband B had committed infidelity. In June of last year, she found out that B had been in contact with the woman who was the cause of their divorce, which led to a major quarrel lasting about a month. Unable to endure it any longer, B tied A to a backhoe outdoors for about an hour before releasing her, and this incident prompted A to decide to commit the crime.
A, who had suffered two surgeries after collapsing from a cerebral aneurysm, nurtured feelings of revenge and hatred and spent a year going to the gym to build strength with the intention of killing B. Later, in June, A visited the aquaculture farm in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where B was conducting business, drank together, and mentioned the past backhoe incident, demanding that B be tied up in the same way.
Exhausted by A’s continuous demands, B said, "Do as you please," and A bound B’s hands with a compression bandage. When B asked to have his hands untied, A refused, saying, "Feel my pain," and a physical struggle ensued. Fearing that releasing B’s hands would lead to an attack, A strangled B to death.

The court stated, "Murder is a serious crime that cannot be justified for any reason," and pointed out, "The crime is very serious considering the planned killing of an ex-husband with whom the defendant had a long marital relationship, as well as the means, method, and circumstances of the crime." Regarding the sentencing, the court explained, "Considering that B likely experienced extreme mental and physical suffering at the time, that the bereaved family including children did not forgive the defendant, and that the defendant committed this crime during a suspended sentence period for drug-related offenses, severe punishment is inevitable."
