Former Gangseo District Mayor Kim Tae-woo Fined in First Trial for Violation of Public Official Election Act

View original imageOn the 19th, the Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Jeong Do-seong) announced that Kim, who was tried for violating the Public Official Election Act, was sentenced to a fine of 800,000 won.
Kim was indicted for holding assemblies and gatherings of more than 25 people during the official election campaign period of last October's by-elections. Article 103 of the Public Official Election Act stipulates that "no one shall hold hometown associations, clan meetings, alumni meetings, unity rallies, outings, or other assemblies or gatherings exceeding 25 participants to influence the election during the election period."

The court recognized Kim's charges as guilty but stated, "Considering that the defendant lost the election and has no prior convictions of the same kind."
