Expanding Library Roles as Spaces for Sharing Knowledge, Culture, and Communication
Mapo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Gang-su) is expanding libraries beyond simple book storage to spaces for sharing knowledge and culture and communication by utilizing advanced information and communication technology.
Mapo Central Library operates a digital experience room where any resident can experience creative activities and self-development.
Here, various experience devices such as Forum VR, Brick Studio, Digital Sketchbook, and Smart Table provide opportunities to turn imagination into reality.
Forum VR is a multi-participation program based on virtual reality where users create stories together, and Brick Studio combines video technology and Lego creative activities to help users produce their own works using stop-motion, a media art technique.
Sogeumnaru Library operates various themed programs centered on media content production in line with changes in the digital industry.
Programs organized by themes such as Miricanvas, podcasts, family video production, and generative AI are customized services reflecting residents' interests and have received great responses.
In particular, programs that allow families to shoot memory videos directly in the sunken plaza and rooftop garden inside the library are popular.
Seogang Library selects one book every month and produces and shares an online content book discussion called 'Seogang Library Official.'
This program involves librarians directly from planning to recording and editing, delivering in-depth reading and information to residents.
Small libraries are also striving to operate programs incorporating artificial intelligence. Yonggang-dong Small Library runs a program called ‘Robots and Artificial Intelligence with Ozobot,’ where participants operate mini robots to learn coding principles and cultivate thinking and problem-solving skills.
Additionally, unmanned automated smart libraries installed at Hapjeong Station and Sangam-dong allow residents to borrow and return books 24 hours a day, receiving great responses from the community.
The district plans to expand smart libraries to a total of four by installing two more to further enhance accessibility and convenience for residents.
