Yangcheon-gu Doubles Free Support for Food Waste Metering Devices...
Doubling Distribution Rate in 2 Years
Food Waste Emissions Reduced by 36%
Applications Open for Households Under 50 Units
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 5th that the adoption rate of the ‘RFID-based food waste volume measurement device installation support’ has significantly increased from the previous 37.1% to 71% in two years, as part of efforts to reduce food waste generation and create a pleasant residential environment.
The ‘Household RFID System for Food Waste’ automatically measures the amount of food waste when it is disposed of in an individual measuring device, charging fees based on the amount discarded.

The district has installed and operates a total of 971 RFID-based individual measuring devices in 123 apartment complexes with 50 or more households, totaling 57,377 households. Especially since the 8th mayoral term, free support for RFID volume measurement devices has been provided to areas affected by aircraft noise, marking the start of full-scale expansion. From this year, the district has fully subsidized the purchase and installation costs of the devices for applying apartment complexes regardless of the region.
Additionally, promotional activities have been conducted by visiting residents’ representative meetings and management offices of apartment complexes, and electrical work for device installation has been actively promoted in aging large complexes.
As a result, 474 devices were installed in 59 complexes over the past two years, accounting for nearly half (48.8%) of the total installed devices (971 units), and the adoption rate of the devices has nearly doubled from 37.1% in 2021 to 71% currently.
A district official stated, “Comparing before and after the installation of RFID volume measurement devices, food waste disposal has decreased by about 36%,” adding, “The installation of these devices is effective in reducing food waste.”
To expand the household RFID system that contributes to reducing food waste, the district plans to support an additional 200 RFID volume measurement devices next year and broaden the eligibility to include apartment complexes with fewer than 50 households that have management entities.
