Candlelight Reappears at Gwanghwamun... Rally Demanding Resignation
Estimated 10,000 Attendees According to Organizers Including Minjunochong
On the night of the 4th, when the emergency martial law was lifted at the request of the National Assembly, a 'candlelight rally' calling for the resignation of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration was held around Gwanghwamun, Seoul.
Civil society organizations such as the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy held a 'Citizens' Rally for Yoon Seok-yeol's Resignation' in front of Donghwa Duty-Free Shop in Jongno-gu from 6 p.m. that evening. The organizers estimated the number of participants at 10,000, while the police's unofficial estimate was 2,000.
Holding candles, they shouted slogans such as "Yoon Seok-yeol, resign," "The people have won," "Let's open the resignation square," and "Let's realize popular sovereignty." Han Sang-hee, co-representative of People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, who took the microphone, called him a "heinous president" and said, "He imposed the very martial law that ruined our history. He must resign immediately." Yang Kyung-soo, chairman of the KCTU, also declared, "From today, Yoon Seok-yeol is no longer the president," and argued that President Yoon should be arrested as a current offender of treason.
Citizens also took the stage to speak freely. Jo Jin-young from Incheon said that she voted for President Yoon in the presidential election two years ago and said, "You all know the saying 'those who start it must finish it,'" adding, "I stand here to take at least minimal responsibility for the mistake I made." She then called for impeachment. Lee Mi-hyun said, "As a mother who sent twin sons to the military, I could not help but stand here," and added, "He declared illegal martial law thinking Korea was his own."
