Ship Design Gets Our Thumbs Up... National Pukyong National University Wins 'Best Award' at the 33rd Student Ship Design Contest
Department of Chosun Ocean System Engineering Free Assignment 1st Place, Designated Assignment 3rd Place
The Ship Design Club ‘ARRA’ (Team Leader: student Kim Ranghyeok, Advisor: Professor Gu Namguk) from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Systems Engineering at Pukyong National University (President Bae Sanghoon) won the top prize, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award, at the 33rd Student Ship Design Contest.
The ARRA team was recognized for their capabilities by submitting a project titled ‘Optimal Design of Fuel Cell Propulsion Ships’ in the open topic category at the contest recently held by the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers at the Changwon Convention Center.
The Student Ship Design Contest is a representative event in the domestic shipbuilding engineering field, with over 200 students from more than 10 universities participating annually. It has been held for over 30 years with the goal of continuously nurturing talent in the shipbuilding and ocean engineering sectors through collaboration between industry and academia.
In this project, the Pukyong National University ARRA team proposed a conceptual design of a ship named ‘AMUSE,’ which incorporates a fuel cell propulsion system using ammonia as fuel for a chemical tanker, along with nitrogen utilization methods and a safety control system. This design was highly evaluated for its efficiency, eco-friendliness, and innovative ideas as a next-generation future ship presenting a concrete design plan under the slogan ‘Leading the 2050 NET-ZERO Era.’
The club also participated in the designated topic category of this contest with another team (Team Leader: student Park Sunho, Advisor: Professor Gu Namguk), winning the third prize, the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers President’s Award, for their ‘15,000 TEU-class Eco-friendly Container Ship Design.’

In their container ship design, they optimized the placement of LNG fuel tanks and eco-friendly facilities by considering container loading efficiency and center of gravity stability. This achievement was recognized for implementing an efficient design that meets environmental regulations while maintaining the large container ship’s characteristic loading capacity.
