Russia responds to Trump's BRICS 100% tariff remark with "Backfire likely"
"Dollar Is Losing Its Appeal as a Global Reserve Currency," Claims
Russia warned that Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, who threatened BRICS countries with a 100% tariff if they abandon the dollar, saying "such attempts could backfire."
On the 2nd (local time), according to major foreign media, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, said at a briefing, "The dollar is losing its appeal as the key currency in many countries, and this trend is accelerating."
On the 30th of last month, President-elect Trump stated to BRICS, an alliance of non-Western emerging economies, "Whether with a new currency or an existing one, if BRICS challenges the dollar hegemony, we will impose a 100% tariff and say goodbye to the U.S. export market." BRICS is an alliance formed in 2009 by five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and has recently been expanding its membership to so-called 'Global South' countries.
Trump has also recently threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the United States' three largest trading partners, urging them to resolve immigration and drug issues.
On the same day, Russia reiterated its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is in crisis due to a rebel counteroffensive. Spokesperson Peskov said, "We continue to support Bashar al-Assad, maintain contact at an appropriate level, and are analyzing the situation," adding, "Russia will establish a position on what is necessary to stabilize the situation."
