Suwon City Excelled in Flood and Wind Disaster Management This Year... Recognized as an 'Outstanding Institution' in Gyeonggi-do Evaluation
The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province has been selected as an excellent institution in the comprehensive evaluation of wind and flood disasters.
On the 29th, Suwon announced that it was selected as an excellent institution in the ‘2024 Summer Wind and Flood Disaster Comprehensive Evaluation’ hosted by Gyeonggi Province, securing 450 million KRW from the disaster management fund for the first half of next year.
To prepare for this year’s rainy season, Suwon inspected 5,489 rainwater inlets, 34 underground passages, 23 steep slopes, 31 local and small rivers, 6 drainage pumping stations, and 8 landslide-prone areas from March to August.

View original imageIn particular, to prevent flooding in the frequently flooded Hwasan underground passage, the city replaced old drainage pumps and established a comprehensive plan including step-by-step response manuals. On July 2, Mayor Lee Jae-jun held an on-site mayor’s office at the Hwasan underground passage and conducted an on-site inspection.
Additionally, the city operated a ‘24-hour rapid response team’ for flood preparedness, installed emergency evacuation facilities in underground passages, carried out flood relief projects in the frequently flooded Yeonghwa-dong area, controlled flood risk areas, and conducted joint drills to prepare for flooding in underground passages and riverside walking trails.

A Suwon city official stated, "Following our selection as an excellent local government in the ‘2023-2024 Winter Natural Disaster Countermeasure Implementation Evaluation’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, we have achieved the distinction of being selected as an excellent institution in the Gyeonggi Province comprehensive evaluation as well," and emphasized, "We will thoroughly prepare and respond this winter to protect the safety of our citizens."
