'Diversion of Traffic Demand' Most Needed During Daejeon Tram Construction Period
Daejeon City Public Survey... Cited Measures Include Promoting Public Transportation, Expanding Detour Routes and Parking Restrictions
Daejeon citizens believe that traffic demand dispersion is most necessary during the construction period of Urban Railway Line 2 (tram).
According to a public opinion survey commissioned by Daejeon City to Korea Information Research, targeting 1,000 Daejeon residents aged 18 and older (with a margin of error of ±3.1p at a 95% confidence level), the most necessary policies during the construction period were cited as traffic demand dispersion (35%) and the promotion of public transportation use (23%).
To achieve traffic demand dispersion, respondents answered that support for promoting public transportation use (27%) and expanding detour routes and no-parking zones (23%) were necessary. For policies to promote public transportation use, increasing the number of public transportation services (33%) and fare support (29%) were mentioned.
Regarding the main means of transportation currently used, 53% answered private cars and 41% answered public transportation. When asked whether they would continue to use their current means of transportation despite expected traffic congestion during the construction of Line 2 (tram), 64.7% said they would continue, while 35.3% said they would change. Among those considering a change, 51.7% said they would use Urban Railway Line 1.
As for the expected effects of Line 2 (tram), respondents cited reduced travel time (37.3%), increased transportation convenience (34%), and revitalization of surrounding commercial areas (9%) in that order.
Regarding their intention to use the tram upon completion, 34.1% said they would actively use it and 50.5% said they would use it when necessary, with a total of 84.6% expressing willingness to use it. By region, Seo-gu showed the highest intention to use at 90.5%, while Dong-gu was the lowest at 77.3%.
Choi Jongmun, Director of Transportation at Daejeon City, said, "Ahead of the tram construction, we will continue to listen to citizens' opinions and seek ongoing cooperation through various communication methods," adding, "The survey results will be fully reflected in future measures to minimize citizen inconvenience and in transportation policies."
