Yeongju-si, Creating a 'Livable City' through Expansion of Railway and Road Networks
Full Effort to Expand Transportation Infrastructure and Improve Resident Convenience in Preparation for Advanced Bearing National Industrial Complex Development
Yeongju City in Gyeongbuk is accelerating the expansion of railway and road networks in response to the anticipated increase in traffic volume due to rising tourism demand and the development of the Yeongju Advanced Bearing National Industrial Complex.
Yeongju City plans to focus on building transportation infrastructure with the goal of creating a livable city where residents and resident companies coexist and grow together.
Based on the double-track electrification project of the Jungang Line (Dodam-Yeongcheon), scheduled to open by the end of this year, the city is also promoting the construction of the Central Region East-West Transversal Railway to expand the transversal railway network.
The Central Region East-West Transversal Railway is a route (total length 330 km) connecting Seosan in Chungnam, Cheonan, Mungyeong, Yecheon, Yeongju, Bonghwa, and Uljin. Yeongju City is making multifaceted efforts to have this included in the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan. Additionally, the single-track project between Jeomchon and Yeongju, already included in the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan, is under review for early implementation.
Efforts are also accelerating to expand the road network. A bypass road (6.3 km) replacing the Jeokdong-Sangmang section of National Road No. 28, aiming to complete a circular road network connecting the northern inland and the East Coast, is being planned. Through this, the city plans to complete the outer circular road network of Yeongju.
Furthermore, to support infrastructure for the new SK Specialty Industrial Complex, the city is preparing to open an intersection between National Road No. 5 and the new industrial complex. This is expected to improve access to national roads for the new industrial complex and adjacent areas, contributing to regional economic revitalization.
The city will also improve intersections in the city center to enhance transportation convenience. Building on the success of the recently installed Nambu Intersection and the roundabout in front of Yeongju Station, the city plans to expand the installation of roundabouts within the urban area to create a traffic environment without traffic lights. Additionally, the city will renovate the Munjeong Intersection, which has been a frequent source of complaints, to improve visibility, road alignment, and prevent traffic accidents.
Moreover, long-standing local road expansion, paving, and opening projects will be expedited. Major projects include ▲road expansion and paving between Seokpo-ri and Jidong-ri in Isan-myeon ▲construction of a connecting road to Punggi IC ▲alignment improvement in Dujeon 3-ri, Jangsu-myeon, among many other road projects.
