Professors Kwon Kyung-sun, Lee Myung-ah, and Lee Sang-won of National Pukyong University Receive Northeast Asian Cultural Studies Association Academic Paper Award
The Northeast Asian Cultural Studies Association (President Shin Jong-dae) announced on the 6th that Professor Kwon Kyung-sun of the Department of East Asian Studies at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University, Professor Lee Myung-ah of the College of Liberal Arts at Kookmin University, and Research Professor Lee Sang-won of the HK+ Project Group at Pukyong National University received the Academic Paper Award from the Northeast Asian Cultural Studies Association.
They received the award at the Autumn Joint International Academic Conference held on the 26th of last month at Pukyong National University, co-hosted by the Northeast Asian Cultural Studies Association, the East Asian Japanese Studies Association, and the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Project Group of Pukyong National University, with researchers in the fields of history, linguistics, society, and culture of the Northeast Asian region participating.
Professor Kwon Kyung-sun received high praise for her paper titled “Representations and Hidden Aspects of Urban Development in Modern Northeast Asia: Focusing on Industrialization and Labor in Cheongjin in the 1930s,” which analyzed labor issues arising during the industrialization process of Cheongjin in the 1930s, revealing the dark realities hidden behind the glamorous facade of urban development and presenting the dual nature of modernization.
Professor Lee Myung-ah attracted academic attention with her paper “The Formation and Meaning of Chinese Personal Nouns Related to 犬/狗 (Dog),” which studied the historical changes of Chinese personal nouns meaning “dog,” clarifying the processes of lexical formation and semantic change from ancient times to the present.

Research Professor Lee Sang-won received high evaluation for his paper “Regional Identity Seen through the Modernization Heritage and Landscape of Sasebo (佐世保),” which analyzed the changes in the U.S. military base and modernization heritage in postwar Sasebo, revealing the unique landscape and substantial changes formed as the heritage was preserved despite changes in the main actors.
