The Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance Technology Successfully Concludes 2024 MRI Safety Management Training Course
The Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance Technology (President Kim Jun-gyu) successfully held the ‘2024 MRI Safety Management Training Course’ as part of preventive education against the rapidly increasing safety accidents in MRI rooms.
The course, held at the Grand Auditorium of the Cancer Center at Kangwon National University Hospital, was attended by nearly 200 people, including society members, related industry workers, and radiology students, despite the harsh weather, demonstrating high interest and enthusiasm for MRI Safety education.
The educational program included ▲How to utilize the ACR guidelines? (Seo Dong-won, Department of Radiology, Severance Hospital), ▲How is MR Safety evaluation of medical devices conducted? (Seo Dong-gi, Osong Advanced Medical Device Development Support Center), ▲Can implant patients undergo MRI scans? (Kim Iseul, Department of Radiology, Samsung Seoul Hospital), ▲How to set SAR conditions for MRI conditional implants? (Park Jin-seok, Department of Radiology, Samsung Seoul Hospital), ▲Safe MRI examination for cochlear implant patients (Lee Kyung-joo, Cochlear Korea), followed by a panel discussion on ‘Current status of MR safety management operations by hospital’ (Yang Sun-wook, Department of Radiology, Asan Medical Center).
The Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance Technology has been providing educational sessions and Q&A opportunities since 2022 to help understand MRI Safety, inviting leaders in domestic medical safety and field safety management experts, in response to the increasing interest in MRI examinations among healthcare workers and the public due to various MRI-related safety accidents, including a fatal accident during an MRI scan in Gimhae, Gyeongnam in 2021. This training course was prepared with this purpose in mind.
In particular, this training issued an ‘MRI Safety Guide’ handbook, compiled in Korean to make the internationally recognized ACR guidelines for MR quality control and safety management more accessible to radiologists working in MRI environments, allowing them to carry it and perform their duties safely on site. Members attending the safety management training course receive 4 continuing education credits, and a certificate is issued only to those who complete all 4 hours of training.
In his opening remarks, President Kim Jun-gyu stated, “While technological advancements in MRI, such as artificial intelligence and deep learning, have shortened examination times and improved image quality, lack of knowledge about MR safety can lead to irreversible serious accidents, causing significant harm to many lives and properties. Recently, we have also arranged time to hear detailed explanations from specialists in this field about examination methods for cochlear implant patients, who are frequently encountered in MRI rooms.”

He added, “I am confident that today’s training course will encourage participants to develop their own awareness of MRI Safety and that the panel discussion will provide an opportunity to resolve any questions. I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Ryu Seong-min, chairman of the Kangwon branch of the Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance Technology, and Mr. Cha Jae-yeol, team leader of the Department of Radiology at Kangwon National University Hospital, for their thoughtful support and hard work that made this event successful.”
