The "Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Korean Sign Language Activation Support Ordinance," proposed by Jeon Seung-il, chairman of the Seo-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City, has passed the standing committee of the 326th extraordinary session.
This ordinance was enacted to guarantee the language rights and improve the quality of life of the deaf and Korean sign language users in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
The main contents of the ordinance include policies to activate Korean sign language within the community, such as support for Korean sign language education and assistance for families of the deaf, sign language interpretation support in administrative actions and convenience facility installations at public institutions like district offices and councils, and symbolic regulations to promote Korean sign language.
Chairman Jeon Seung-il stated, "I proposed this ordinance with the hope that residents who use sign language will not be marginalized and can take a step forward in a limited social environment," adding, "We will continue to make various efforts to enhance the rights and interests of socially vulnerable groups to create a barrier-free city Seo-gu where everyone is safe and comfortable."
