Yangsan City to Conduct 'READY Korea' Drill This Year
Linked with Radiological Emergency Response Joint Training
Yangsan City, Gyeongnam conducted the '2024 READY Korea' drill at Yangsan Gymnasium on the 25th of last month.
The READY Korea drill is organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and is a joint government-private sector exercise to check preparedness for large-scale and complex disasters caused by potential risk factors such as the climate crisis and the aging of urban infrastructure.

This drill, hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, involved 48 organizations including Gyeongnam Province, Yangsan City, Ulsan City, Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, and Saeul Nuclear Power Headquarters. The exercise simulated a fire at the Saeul Nuclear Power Plant and a radioactive leak caused by an earthquake.
During the drill, Yangsan City established a Regional Radiological Disaster Countermeasure Headquarters and conducted both a tabletop exercise and a field drill, evacuating around 300 residents from the Eungsang and Dongmyeon areas within the radiological emergency planning zone to the Yangsan Gymnasium shelter. Additional training included disaster victim registration, distribution of relief supplies, and shelter experience exercises.

A Yangsan City official stated, "We thank the citizens who actively participated in the drill, and especially appreciate the cooperation of related agencies such as the police station, fire station, and education support office for ensuring the smooth operation of the exercise. Through continuous training, we will do our utmost to ensure that citizens can live in a safe environment by responding more thoroughly and effectively to radiological disasters and other emergencies."
