Argentine President Javier Milei has drawn unexpected attention and controversy after reportedly quoting lines verbatim from the American TV drama The West Wing during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
Argentine daily La Naci?n reported that the final part of President Milei's speech at the UN General Assembly matches the dialogue from Season 4, Episode 15 of the American political drama The West Wing. This section expressed beliefs about freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of trade, and related topics.
At this UN General Assembly, President Milei took a hardline stance by criticizing the UN's "socialist agenda" and proposing an "agenda for freedom." The plagiarized passage stated, "We believe in freedom of expression for all. Freedom of religion for all, freedom of trade, and limited government. And in this era, because what happens in one nation quickly affects others, we believe all peoples must be free from tyranny and oppression in forms such as economic oppression, economic dependency, and religious fanaticism. These fundamental concepts must be supported not only in words but also diplomatically, economically, and materially."
The media outlet pointed out that it is unclear whether this is simple plagiarism, a tribute to the drama, or a diplomatic gesture. It was also reported that Santiago Caputo, a close aide to President Milei, is an avid fan of The West Wing.
