UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting on 2nd Over Iran Retaliatory Attacks: "No Expansion of War"
The United Nations (UN) Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on the morning of the 2nd (local time) regarding Iran's attacks on Israel and concerns over escalation in the Middle East.
According to the Associated Press and others on the 1st, the meeting was convened at the request of France and Israel. Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the UN, sent a letter to the council late that afternoon, stating, "Iran is trying to destroy Israel with a ring of fire on seven fronts," and urged the UN Security Council to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
On the same day, Iran launched a large-scale missile attack against Israel. This comes about five months after missile and drone strikes on Israeli territory in April. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps described this missile launch as retaliation for the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Palestinian armed faction Hamas; Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Lebanese Shia armed faction Hezbollah; and Abbas Nilforushan, deputy commander of operations for the Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Israeli military also announced that Iran fired approximately 180 missiles that day. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, who convened a security cabinet meeting late at night, warned, "Iran made a big mistake tonight," and "will pay the price" in retaliation. This has further heightened the crisis of war in the Middle East. Notably, Iran's attack occurred at the time Israel launched a ground military operation targeting southern Lebanon, a stronghold of the pro-Iranian armed faction Hezbollah.
