Changwon District Court Sentences to 1 Year and 6 Months Imprisonment
A 'bold' company accountant who stole hundreds of millions of won from company funds over 100 times to cover living expenses and other costs was sentenced to prison.
On the 1st, Jeong Yuntaek, chief judge of the Criminal Division 1 at Changwon District Court in Changwon, Gyeongnam, announced that he sentenced Mr. A, a man in his 40s charged with embezzlement in the course of duty, to 1 year and 6 months in prison. Mr. A, who worked as a company accountant, was indicted on charges of withdrawing approximately 370 million won from company funds 119 times over about 14 months from August 2013 to October 2014 and using the money without authorization. He used the stolen money to purchase gift certificates or for living expenses.
It was also investigated that he had a prior record of embezzlement at a previous company before this incident.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The crime was committed shortly after he started working at the company, and the identified amount of damage is very large, so the nature of the crime is serious," but also considered "that some of the damages have been recovered and that he has belatedly shown remorse for his wrongdoing."
