Forum Held to Create a Leading Carbon-Neutral City

On the 25th, Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam, made this statement at the Changwon Carbon Neutral Leading City Forum, which was held under the theme "Responsibilities and Roles for Creating a Carbon Neutral Leading City" in collaboration with the Changwon Carbon Neutral Support Center.
Changwon Special City organized this forum for the first time under its auspices to emphasize the need for carbon neutrality and climate change response, as carbon neutrality emerges as a global paradigm.
On this day, over 100 participants?including Mayor Hong Nam-pyo, experts in carbon neutrality and renewable energy, citizens, and students?attended the event, which proceeded in the order of keynote presentations, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions.
The participants discussed ways to achieve carbon neutrality in their respective roles as agents of climate action and explored Changwon's response strategies to become a leading carbon neutral city.
The keynote presentations were delivered by Seo Ae-sook, Director of the Changwon Carbon Neutral Support Center, on "Tan-Tan-Dae-Ro (Carbon Reduction, Carbon Zero, Great Innovation Roadmap), Changwon," and by Shin Hyun-seok, President of the Busan Institute, on "Turning the Climate Crisis into Momentum for Carbon Neutral Climate Tech Innovation!"
Following this, Lee Dong-geun, Professor at Gyeongsang National University, moderated a panel discussion featuring Koo Hyung-soo, Research Fellow at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements; Lee Jae-deok, Principal Researcher at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute; Kang Yong-hyuk, Honorary Researcher at the Korea Institute of Energy Research; Koo Jeom-deuk, Member of the Changwon Special City Council; and Park Sun-hee, Head of the Climate and Air Division at Changwon City. The panel engaged in active discussions on visions and strategies for transforming into a sustainable carbon neutral leading city.
During the panel discussion, participants offered suggestions and policy proposals on topics such as fostering the climate tech industry in the era of carbon neutrality, expanding the use of renewable energy, strategies for concretizing the vision of a carbon neutral leading city, responses to carbon border adjustment mechanisms to overcome global trade barriers, raising public awareness of carbon neutrality, and strengthening cooperation among citizens, government, industry, and academia. They also proposed practical ways to enhance citizen collaboration for achieving carbon neutrality in everyday life.
Mayor Hong stated, "In line with global trends, carbon neutrality is a responsibility that industrial complexes and companies must fulfill, and it is an indispensable task of our time to protect future generations. As the city has proposed the 'transition to a leading carbon neutral industrial complex' as the 50-year future vision for Changwon National Industrial Complex, we will do our utmost to restructure the industrial framework in an eco-friendly manner and become a trusted hub of green industry in the global trade market."
