'Eternal Underdog' Jang Gi-pyo Posthumously Awarded the Order of Civil Merit, Moran Medal
Employment Minister Kim Moon-soo Visits Funeral Hall
Recognized for Contributions to the Development of Democracy
The government posthumously awarded the Order of Civil Merit, Moran Medal, to Jang Gi-pyo, director of the Newspaper Policy Research Institute, who passed away on the 22nd.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that Minister Kim Moon-soo visited the late director's funeral hall set up at Seoul National University Hospital in the afternoon and presented the posthumous Order of Civil Merit in recognition of his contributions to the development of democracy.
Known as the "Eternal Activist," Director Jang entered Seoul National University Law School in 1966 and devoted himself to student and labor movements, inspired by events such as the self-immolation of labor activist Jeon Tae-il. He contributed to the democratization of the Republic of Korea through multiple imprisonments, releases, and long periods of being wanted.
