Daejeon City Council's Electric Vehicle Fire Prevention Ordinance Passes Standing Committee
City Council Member Lee Jaekyung: "Fire Prevention and Safety Systems Must Be Established"
The "Daejeon City Ordinance on Fire Prevention and Support for Safety Facilities in Electric Vehicle-Only Parking Zones," proposed by Lee Jaekyung, a member of the Daejeon City Council's Welfare and Environment Committee (People Power Party, Seo-gu District 3), was passed as originally drafted at the 3rd meeting of the 281st temporary session's Administrative Autonomy Committee on the 10th.
The ordinance includes provisions for: △establishing fire prevention and response plans for electric vehicle-only parking zones in Daejeon City; △setting and recommending standards for the installation of safety facilities; △supporting the installation of safety facilities; and △establishing cooperative systems.
According to data from the Daejeon Sejong Research Institute, as of 2022, there were 7,745 registered electric vehicles in Daejeon, with 2,686 charging stations installed.
Lee Jaekyung stated, "Recently, the neologism 'electric vehicle phobia' (Jeon-gicha Phobia) has emerged due to the increasing number of fire accidents related to electric vehicles and the growing scale of the damage," adding, "To ensure that citizens can safely and conveniently use electric vehicle-only parking zones and charging facilities, we must establish a fire prevention and safety system."
The ordinance is scheduled to be voted on at the 3rd plenary session of the 281st temporary session on the 12th.
