Kim Taegyu Found by Naver Urges "Strengthening Platform Self-Regulation and Responsibility"
Visit to Naver for On-site Inspection of Telecommunications Policy
Acting Chairman Kim Tae-gyu of the Korea Communications Commission visited Naver's 1784 building located in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do on the 5th to urge the strengthening of self-regulation and responsibility.
On this day, Acting Chairman Kim held a meeting with Naver officials and stated, "Naver is a valuable company that has led Korea's IT industry as a platform with global competitiveness and has provided customized services to the public." The visit was intended to review the current status of the platform industry and listen to the opinions of Naver officials.

Acting Chairman Kim diagnosed, "However, as its role is significant, various illegal information and false manipulated information such as deepfake sexual crime materials and drugs are evolving and spreading rapidly online, causing harm to victims," and added, "There are ongoing criticisms that portals, by acting as gatekeepers beyond news, distort public opinion formation and the media market."
In response, he urged taking bold and proactive self-regulation with a sense of public responsibility in line with global trends. He explained that the European Union (EU) is enforcing the Digital Services Act to prevent the distribution of illegal information and ensure system transparency, and that the United Kingdom is also strengthening platform operators' self-regulation and accountability through the Online Safety Act.
Acting Chairman Kim requested, "Please take the lead in improving the methods of information provision and recommendation services to fully perform the portal's original role as an information mediator and to create a diverse and balanced public opinion formation and a healthy ecosystem in our society."

In response, Yubong-seok, Naver's Head of Policy and RM, said, "Naver's services are sometimes misunderstood unintentionally, and many unexpected issues occur," and added, "We will strive to improve misunderstandings and insufficient understanding about us."
