Professor Seokyeongdeok Murder Threat: 30s Korean National Arrested... "Threatening Comments Were Chilling"
A man in his 30s who left a murder threat comment on an article related to Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University, a "Korean public relations expert," was apprehended by the police.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 3rd that they had booked a Korean national, Mr. A, without detention on charges of intimidation and sent the case to the prosecution. Mr. A is suspected of leaving a comment threatening to kill Professor Seo on an article about Dokdo on a portal internet site at 12:25 p.m. on the 20th of last month.
The article contained content stating that a social networking service (SNS) account impersonating Professor Seo was promoting Takeshima (the name Japan claims for Dokdo) and the Rising Sun Flag. Mr. A left a comment on this article saying, "I will kill you today," which led to an investigation after being reported by netizens who saw it.
Mr. A admitted to his crime during the police investigation, and it was found that he had no particular grudge against Professor Seo. A police official stated, "Although Mr. A did not reveal a specific motive for the crime, it appears he did not actually intend to harm Professor Seo."
On the same day, Professor Seo posted on his SNS, "Recently, I received murder threats online, which caused a big controversy," and added, "Thanks to many netizens who worried and supported me, the case was resolved well."
He said, "I also underwent a victim investigation last week, and I actually saw the post the suspect left in the portal comment section, and honestly, it was chilling," and confessed, "I could only think, 'How could someone post such a comment?'"
He continued, "Hiding behind anonymity to make such murder threats to someone is truly something that must never happen," and expressed, "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the netizens who quickly reported the comment as soon as they saw it."
