Lee Sanggeun, the governor of Goseong County in Gyeongnam, visited the site in Jaranman where oyster deaths occurred due to oxygen-deficient water masses, to encourage local fishermen.
In Jaranman, Goseong County, oysters being farmed have suffered mass deaths caused by abnormal water masses suspected to be oxygen-deficient, which have been occurring since early August.

Governor Lee stated, "The frequent natural disasters during the summer have made life difficult for fishermen. We will thoroughly investigate the causes and, based on the findings, prepare support measures to ensure that fishermen's livelihoods are not further threatened."
An oxygen-deficient water mass refers to water in which the dissolved oxygen concentration drops below 3 mg/L. Such phenomena often occur along the southern coast during prolonged heatwaves in midsummer, leading to mass deaths of farmed marine life and significant losses for fishermen.
So far, the reported damages in Goseong County include 14 oyster farms, with estimated losses amounting to 197 million KRW.
Meanwhile, Goseong County plans to promptly conduct damage investigations with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the incident. Once the cause is identified, the county will establish comprehensive recovery measures to support fishermen struggling with the mass deaths of farmed marine life.
